The Code of Practice on the Right to Disconnect is effective since 1 April 2021 and applies to all employees, including people working from home. Developed by the WRC, the Code of Practice provides guidance on an employee’s right to disengage from work outside normal working hours. The Act also provides for formulation of Accessibility Standards/Guidelines for incorporation across various sectors. DWP will improve signposting to other support, including health services, simplify forms and improve advocacy, so that disabled people can find their way through the benefit system and access wider support.

People tend to assume that the person on the other side of the computer is similar to them, because they lack the face-to-face connections in that digital setting. They need to raise awareness levels and encourage staff to consider the needs of others.

Some people who use a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair, walker or cane, see these aids as part of their personal space. Similarly, never start to push someone’s wheelchair without first asking the occupant’s permission. Make eye contact and speak to people directly, even if their personal care attendant or interpreter is with them. When a person who is deaf has an interpreter, the user will look at the interpreter as you are talking. While this is happening, focus your interaction with the user.
