DJ 2Tone Jones
Since touching down in the nation’s capitol in 2001 via Atlanta, GA, DJ 2-Tone Jones has slowly and steadily been carving out his own niche in the D.C. area hip-hop scene. A true fundamentals DJ, 2-Tone speaks with his hands as in the tradition of a Pete Rock or E-Swift, and through his bottomless crates has rocked parties up and down the east coast, from as far up as New York to as far down as A-Town.
But 2-Tone is not your one dimensional party and bullsh*t DJ; his list of current gigs and artists with whom he has spun with is as diverse as the musical genres within his crates (and crates) of records, which is a sonic collage of dusty groove Funk, Soul, Afro-Beat, Jazz, Roots Reggae/Dancehall, mainstream Rap/R&B, Go-Go (can’t forget that), Hip-Hop, Lounge/Deep House and 70’s & 80’s Rock.
On the performance side 2-Tone has spun with, and alongside, the likes of DJ Premier, Jazzy Jeff, Tame One (formerly of the artifacts), Mista Sinista (formerly of the X-ecutioners), Tony Touch, DJ Revolution, Mr. Lif, DJ Language, DJ P, The Vinyl Junkies, Asheru, DJ Dirty Hands, DJ Stylus, Heron Gibran, Dirty Water, 9th Wonder, DJ Babu, Critically Acclaimed, DJ Oso-Fresh, DJ Mel, and even Dick Gregory just to name a few.
Currently 2-Tone can be found most nights of the week at a number of venues around the D.C. area and on the airwaves. On Tuesday nights from 11pm to midnight 2-Tone is the resident DJ for a progressive hip-radio show, “Blackademics,” part of the Decipher hip-hop strip on WPFW 89.3 FM; D.C.’s only independently run radio station. Every 2nd Wednesday of the month on the top floor of the Common Share, 2-Tone and crew host Artz & Craftz, an intimate arts exhibition where artists actually create work while the music spins. Every other month he serves up a mix of mainstream rap and r&b, old school, and dancehall at Stockholm 1976, a monthly party and fundraiser that brings together D.C.’s movers and shakers to support various causes. And lastly, 2-Tone himself puts together the Old School Basement Party, which is held every 2-3 months at The Low Tone Lounge, one of D.C.’s most exclusive after-hours spots.
As his notoriety grows, 2-Tone is not one to just sit back and watch. Along with a handful of D.C.’s most talented visual artists, Mr. Jones is a member of a cutting-edge art troupe/marketing group known as AM Radio: Artwork Mbilashaka. He is an official DJ for Shaman Work Recordings, whose rooster includes artist such as CL Smooth, Wale Oyejide, John Robinson (aka Lil’ Sci), Metal Fingers (aka MF Doom), Emanon, and others. Also, in February 2006 2-Tone officially launched The Jones Collection, a series of weekly mixes of ‘gems’ that Mr. Jones digs for in his crates. The mixes are available for free downloading at www.vjcrecordings.com/store.php. Most recently he has been featured in DC Pulse Magazine, The Washington Post, and on XM Satellite Radio doing what he does best, speaking through his hands.
